Nigeria’s FIRS Appointed as a Peppol Authority

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has officially been designated as a Peppol Authority, assuming responsibility for overseeing Nigeria’s local Peppol network and managing the onboarding of access point providers. This development marks a major step forward in the country’s digital invoicing and tax modernization efforts.
Nigeria Joins the Global Peppol Community
On September 26, 2025, the OpenPeppol website was updated to include FIRS among the latest recognized Peppol Authorities – a significant milestone in Nigeria’s e-invoicing journey. With this designation, Nigeria joins other Peppol-participating jurisdictions such as Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, and Australia, expanding the network’s global reach.
FIRS has incorporated Peppol standards into the national e-invoicing framework to ensure seamless, secure, and interoperable exchange of electronic invoices, especially for cross-border transactions. By aligning with internationally recognized standards, Nigeria aims to strengthen its competitiveness in global trade and enhance business connectivity across borders.
In collaboration with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), FIRS has successfully registered Nigeria’s Tax Identification Number (TIN) under the ISO/IEC 6523 International Coding System. This global recognition is expected to streamline taxpayer identification, improve transparency in cross-border transactions, and support the unification of Tax IDs across the Nigerian federal and state levels.
